Summer’s starting to wind down, and people are going on some last-minute road trips before the summer’s gone entirely. There’s few things more American than tossing some rumpled clothes in the old duffel bag, grabbing some friends, and hitting the open road for a few days of bumming across the great wide open.

Of course, there are some dangers that go with the territory, ranging from issues of driving safety to finding a safe place to spend the night. It can be very stressful out there on the road, but keeping a few basic safety tips in mind can help. The following suggestions can help make your trip both fun and safe:

Make sure your car is in good working order before heading off. Nothing’s worse than being five hundred miles from anywhere and having your car break down on you. There’s nothing pleasant about having to find a tow truck in the middle of nowhere. Make sure your car is in good shape, has fresh oil, and has rotated tires before heading off on your trip.
Don’t take chances behind the wheel. Accidents are bad enough when you’re near home, where you know mechanics and have nearby friends with cars who can help you out. Getting in an accident in the middle of nowhere is an enormous hassle. And that’s not to mention the potential for injury or even death. So make sure you drive safely and don’t take unnecessary risks.
Trade off driving duties. Long, flat stretches of road can be murder on a driver. It’s easy to get highway hypnosis when you’ve been driving for a long time, and getting tired is inevitable. By trading off drivers every few hours, you can help stave off the dangerous effects of driver fatigue.
Find the right motel. If you’re worried about your overnight safety, you need to be able to assess the safety of a potential motel stop. Indoor hallways are safer than outdoor ones, as the room doors do not open directly into the open. Additionally, second- or third-story rooms are safer than those on the first floor.
